After leading hundreds of tours in Northern Pakistan, our guides have compiled the definitive packing list. Don't leave home without these essentials.
# The Ultimate Packing List for Northern Pakistan
After leading hundreds of tours in Northern Pakistan over 12 years, our guides have seen every packing mistake possible. Here is the list we give every guest before departure.
## Clothing (Layer System)
**Base Layer:** 2 moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms
**Mid Layer:** Fleece jacket (essential even in summer at altitude)
**Outer Layer:** Waterproof and windproof jacket with hood
**Down Jacket:** Essential above 3,000m and for evenings anywhere in the north
**Trousers:** 2 pairs of lightweight hiking trousers (no jeans — too heavy and slow to dry)
**Socks:** 4+ pairs of merino wool trekking socks
**Hat & Gloves:** Even in summer, evenings above 3,000m can be near freezing
## Footwear
- Waterproof ankle-support trekking boots (broken in before the trip)
- Lightweight sandals or slip-ons for camp and guesthouses
- Gaiters (for snow crossings and glacier treks)
## Essentials
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ (UV is extreme at altitude — you will burn fast)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Sunglasses (100% UV protection, polarized recommended)
- Headtorch + spare batteries
- Water purification tablets or filter
- Personal first aid kit
- Altitude sickness tablets (Diamox — consult your doctor)
- Insect repellent
## Electronics
- Camera + spare batteries (cold kills battery life)
- Portable charger / power bank (electricity is unreliable in remote areas)
- Universal adapter
- Offline maps downloaded (Maps.me — highly recommended)
## Documents
- Original CNIC/Passport
- Printed tour itinerary and emergency contacts
- Travel insurance documents (with emergency number)
