Astore Valley
The Land of Pastures and Gateway to Deosai
Discover Astore Valley
Astore Valley is one of Gilgit-Baltistan’s most scenic and relatively less-crowded mountain regions, known for green pastures, forests, alpine lakes, traditional villages and dramatic Himalayan landscapes. Rama Meadows and Rama Lake are among Astore’s best-known attractions, combining pine and cedar forests, open grasslands and views towards the Nanga Parbat massif. Travellers can also explore Rupal Valley, Chilam and other mountain settlements surrounding the district. Astore is also one of the traditional gateways to Deosai National Park. During the accessible summer season, travellers can continue through Chilam towards the vast Deosai plains and Sheosar Lake, experiencing a gradual transition from forested valleys to high-altitude alpine wilderness. More adventurous journeys can continue towards remote areas such as Minimarg and Domail, subject to current road access, permissions and local regulations. Astore is particularly suitable for photographers, nature lovers, trekkers and travellers looking for a quieter alternative to the busier tourist centres of Hunza and Skardu. Because several major attractions are seasonal and located at high altitude, road and weather conditions should always be checked before travel.
