Discover Khaplu Valley
Khaplu Valley is one of Baltistan's most culturally rich and scenic destinations, located in Ghanche District east of Skardu. Set along the Shyok River and surrounded by the Karakoram mountains, the valley combines royal history, centuries-old architecture, green terraces, orchards and traditional Balti communities. The historic Khaplu Palace, locally known as Yabgo Khar, is the valley's best-known landmark and reflects the legacy of the former rulers of Khaplu. Nearby, Chaqchan Mosque represents one of Baltistan's most important historic religious buildings, with distinctive traditional architecture and centuries of cultural significance. Beyond the main town, travellers can explore peaceful villages, fruit orchards, riverside landscapes and neighbouring valleys such as Machulo and Saling. Khaplu also serves as the gateway towards Hushe Valley, one of the great adventure regions of the Karakoram and an important starting point for trekking and mountaineering routes towards Masherbrum and Gondogoro. Khaplu is especially suitable for couples, families, photographers, cultural travellers and international visitors looking for a quieter alternative to central Skardu. Main heritage attractions are easily accessible by road, while more remote valleys and trekking areas require additional time and suitable mountain transport.
