About This Destination

Discover Shigar Valley

Shigar Valley is one of Baltistan’s most culturally and geographically significant destinations, located a short drive from Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan. Surrounded by the Karakoram mountains and irrigated by the Shigar River, the valley combines historic architecture, traditional villages, orchards, desert landscapes and access to some of the world’s greatest mountain regions. The historic Shigar Fort, locally known as Fong Khar, is the valley’s best-known heritage landmark. Nearby, the centuries-old Amburiq Mosque reflects the region’s distinctive Balti architecture and long cultural history. Travellers can also explore the surrounding villages, orchards and agricultural landscapes that give Shigar a quieter and more traditional atmosphere than nearby Skardu city. South of the main valley lies the dramatic Sarfaranga Cold Desert, where sand dunes rise against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains. Blind Lake, also known as Jarba Zhou, offers another peaceful landscape surrounded by mountains and greenery. Shigar also serves as the gateway towards Askole and the great Karakoram trekking routes leading to Baltoro Glacier, K2 and other major peaks. While most visitors focus on the easily accessible cultural and scenic attractions around central Shigar, adventure travellers can continue much deeper into the district. Shigar Valley is particularly suitable for couples, families, photographers, cultural travellers and international visitors looking to combine heritage, scenery and relaxed sightseeing with a wider Skardu itinerary.
