Discover Deosai National Park
Deosai National Park is one of Pakistan’s most remarkable high-altitude landscapes, stretching across the mountains between Skardu and Astore in Gilgit-Baltistan. Known as the “Land of Giants,” the vast alpine plateau sits at an average elevation of approximately 4,114 metres above sea level and remains inaccessible for much of the year because of heavy winter snowfall. During the short summer season, Deosai transforms into an open wilderness of rolling plains, streams, wetlands and colourful alpine wildflowers. The national park was established to protect its unique ecosystem, including the Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan marmots and other high-altitude wildlife. Sheosar Lake is one of Deosai’s signature attractions, surrounded by broad plains and distant mountain peaks. Other important stops include Bara Pani and Kala Pani, which are commonly visited during 4×4 journeys across the plateau and also provide opportunities for camping and wildlife observation. Deosai can be approached from both Skardu and Astore. The Skardu route passes Sadpara Lake before climbing onto the plateau, while the Astore route enters through Chilam. Travellers can visit Deosai as a long day excursion or spend a night camping for a deeper experience. Because of its extreme altitude, remote location and rapidly changing weather, Deosai is best suited to travellers who are comfortable with mountain travel. Visitors should use suitable 4×4 transport, carry warm clothing and essential supplies, respect national park regulations and maintain a safe distance from wildlife.
